The Moscow Coup Attempt

Posted in: Music

Derek Whitacre is The Moscow Coup Attempt, and through his first album “The Failure of Shortwave Radio,” he explores the concept and breakdown of communication in the world today. The dialectic that Derek crafts for the listener is actually created via the use of old-school short wave radio station samples in conjunction with a soundscape that features acoustic, electronic, and ambient elements. For his live shows, Derek incorporates the use of a self-compiled montage film that is projected onto the stage to accompany the music he delivers with his laptop and synths. In fact, the films started out as an accompaniment to his music, but this visual element is now almost as central to the piece as the music is. Check out the video below to get a better idea of what I’m talking about. The combined impact of the music and visuals produce quite a powerful impact. Oh yah and check out The Moscow Coup Attempt website for even more audio/visual goodies.

Piscis

Posted in: Music

piscisIf you’re in the mood for some highly experimental ambient electronic music, look no further than Piscis who lives in Mexico. Unfortunately, the only info I could find on this guy is in Spanish, and I’m more than a few years removed from my Spanish-speaking skills that once existed back in high school. But music speaks for itself, and as I said earlier, this is some really avant-garde shit. How do I know? Because the music doesn’t make any sense to me. Its abstractness and use of unconventional sound effects remind me of a fluorescent light blub that is flickering incessantly until it finally burns out and dies. Take a listen, and if you get it, feel free to inform the uninformed right here.

Richard May of Pixelsurgeon

Posted in: Guys, Art

richardmayIf you are a part of the creative world, then the website Pixelsurgeon is a brand name. Pixelsurgeon is the brainchild of Richard May, a commercial illustrator, who, along with Jason Arber and Rina Cheung, envisioned an internet destination that covered a wide range of topics that include art, music, technology, and culture. Today, Pixelsurgeon is a collective of well over 50 individuals who contribute to the site on a regular basis. It’s chock full of news, interviews, reviews that are so good you’ll find yourself coming back everyday. Check out their review on the Da Vinci Code movie, and interview of comic book artist/writer/publisher Liam Sharp. And of course don’t forget to take a look at Richard’s personal website where you can view his portfolio of illustrations that are in demand by everyone from Vogue, Sony Style, Nordstrom, and Time Magazine.

Omega 3

Posted in: Music

omega3I’ve heard a lot of hip-hop on MySpace, but the stuff by Omega 3 is in the top of the heap when it comes to originality. Each member in the trio is from a different area (LA, Santa Cruz, San Jose), and they come together with a synergy that is sure to keep you hooked. I’m not sure which member is behind the beats but they have a simple yet psychadelic sound that lay the foundation for the intricate and fast-paced staccato verse-spitting by the emcees. You can download their entire 3rd album at www.Omega3HipHop.com. It’s free and it’s dope. What have you got to lose?

fonzworth

There are many imitators, but only one Fonzworth Bentley. Diddy’s old butler has got his own gig going and apparently has a debut album coming soon. You can listen to a few tracks over at his website www.fonzworthbently.net.

lezrodDavid Velez aka Lezrod, is one of the most promising digital musicians to come out of Latin America. His brand of ambient electronica is generating quite a bit of buzz thanks to its multi-faceted tunes that are rooted in everything from jazz to D&B to hip-hop. His newly released album is called “Data Transfer,” and named after the process of transferring chunks of data between David and his friends from all over the world. All in all the album is a diverse compilation comprised of intricate soundworks, complex rhythms, and plenty of odd bleeps and tones that are sure to keep you on your musical toes.

I had no idea this guy existed, but apparently there is room for more than one Tom on MySpace. I present to you “Black T0m.” Yes, that’s a zero in place of the letter O. Apparently this guy has a growing cult fan base on MySpace. Add him!
