Heavyweight Dub Champion

Posted in: Music

hdcThe members of dub music group Heavyweight Dub Champion consider themselves warriors in the battle to liberate the closed minds of humanity so that all can realize the power of their own inner consciousness. Yeah, it’s deep stuff and HDC take it very seriously. The group is fanatical about producing virtually all of their sounds from scratch in order to create a custom-tailored auditory experience that will have maximum impact on the human psyche. HDC lives to perform at live shows, where they use their homegrown pre-recorded sounds in conjunction with vintage synthesizers, saxophone, turntables, percussion, and vocals. Check out their track ‘Arrival’ which features the legendary KRS ONE. If you like what you hear, go to their website where their last album can be either downloaded via iTunes or bought on CD at CDbaby.com.

Steven Daily

Posted in: Art

stevendailyOriginally a classicly-trained artist at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA, Steven Daily was simply unsatisfied with his style at the time, and took immediate outside inspiration from the world of graffiti. By taking his art into his own hands, Steven has now become a highly accomplished artist. Immediately noticeable in Steven’s work are the themes of fantasy mixed with a strong sense of foreboding and an often morbid and ominous aesthetic. Steven was most recently showing his work in the hugely successful art show ‘I am 8 bit’ @Gallery 1988. You can view more of his work at www.stevendaily.com.

The Playpen

theplaypen

What happens when you combine the art of “The Boondocks” illustrator Carl Jones with the street thug mentality of rap artist Beanie Siegel? The result is a pretty crazy looking animated cartoon called “The Playpen” that may very soon end up on a TV screen near you. The storyline revolves around a kiddie daycare where the 3 year olds walk and talk like regular street-harded cons, and the teachers act more like correctional officers than anything else. There’s still no word as to whether or not this show will get aired, but based on what you can see at The Playpen’s MySpace page, the show appears to be well thought out and executed. You can read an interview with the creators of The Playpen on RapTalk.net.

If you’re a graffiti artist or use spray paint, markers, and ink in your illustrations, I’d imagine that a store like Art Primo is something of a Toys R Us for all you art kids. Art Primo, based in Seattle, WA, has a crazy selection of over 20 different spray paint caps, 5 types of markers, and a great selection of graffiti DVDs and magazines as well. Definately worth a visit if you are an artist, or even if you’re just a fan and want to pick up a DVD.

Genius of Soul

Posted in: Music

geniusofsoulEveryone can use a bit of soul music to chill out to. If you happen to be in that kind of mood, try checking out Genius of Soul. The five member group is based in San Diego, where they are making a lot of noise in the local scene with their music that is a homage to classic soul with a funky/hip-hop new school twist. Expect to hear that chilled-out smoky lounge jazz sound combined with some slick lyricism. There’s nothing amateurish going on here, just the work of some true to form geniuses. Check it out.

Glideascope

Posted in: Music

Taking down-tempo music to a whole new level is an artist/producer known as Glideascope. What sets him apart from other acts is his fusion of live classical orchestration that includes the violin, cello, sax, viola, flute, and percussion with the traditional electronic template for trip-hop/downtempo. So not only do you have the electronic element, but you have the real deal strings and percussion on the track as well, which give Glideascope’s music an extra dimension of sorts and definately a leg up on the competition. Check out the trailer video to Glideascope’s new album, Audio Cinematography, to see a graphic representation of Glideascope’s influences. A must see.

Please click this link and vote for Glideascope’s video which is currently at the #2 slot. There’s also a chance to win a free iPod Nano and a copy of Glideascope’s album.
